What is a sync license?

A sync license is a legal agreement between a music buyer and a music seller

A sync license is a legal agreement between a music buyer and seller (the owner of a song) that grants permission to use the song in conjunction with a visual image, such as a film, tv commercial, or streaming video.

The video game Grand Theft Auto V had to license over 240 songs, both new and existing, that were played on 15 different in-game music radio stations. Ivan Pavlovich, the game’s music supervisor, had a complicated job to clear each song, tracking down both the publishing and master rights and negotiating a sync license agreement for each track.
